Black and White . . .

by default

When I saw the branch of this dogwood tree
after the overnight snow,
it reminded me of an outstretched hand.

"God has given us two hands,
one to receive with and the other to give with."

Are Hornet's Nests . . .

weather predictors?

“When hornets build nests near the ground
a harsh winter is expected”.
or  . . .
“the higher the nest, the more severe the winter will be”.
Hornets build their large, gray paper nests in late spring and at the end of summer. The bees (except new queens) die at the end of the season, and the nests are abandoned.
So . . .
it's more likely that when building their nests, they prefer dry weather. If the season has been wet, they build higher! And when winter comes they r.i.p.

Itsy Bitsy . . .

but not a spider

Itsy bitsy snowflakes caught in this spider's web

Itsy-Bitsy Spider

The itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the spout again

Lazy Hazy Day of . . .

not Summer but Fall

While these two anglers became acquainted

I observed a school group arriving

Half of the group headed to the dock
For the Nautical Nature Tour

While the other half headed for a Nature Walk
But first they stopped at this shelter for a Nature Talk

So I listened in from the deck below
This was a beautiful 75 pound Coyote pelt.
It had been killed by a car.

Swan at Sunset

Glimmer at Sunset

and Mr. Swan gliding along.
I don't know what aquatic plant this is (possibly invasive elodea) but
it reflects light in interesting ways.

Smelling the Roses . . .

or in this case . . .
Sniffing the Raspberries

a repeat photo but raspberries and the 4th of July just go together.

Yes Virginia . . .

These two wildflowers were a familiar sight along the path through the woods to our one room schoolhouse.

Pennsylvania's official Wildflower
Trillium

And the May apple

May apple blossoms and apples that follow
hide below their own 'umbrella' of leaves.

Yes Virginia, a mile and half though the woods
everyday rain or shine.
One teacher and six grades.
(seems like a lifetime ago. Oh wait, it was)

'Tis the Season . . .

for mid Spring frost

and the frost is on the pumpkin?

Make that the fruit trees.
Hopefully too light to damage them.

On the brighter side

The wild dogwoods are gorgeous this year.

No Winter lasts forever. No Spring skips it's turn

An Age Old Question . . .

weed or flower?

These wild Violets have invaded our lawn.
But I don't mind when they appear among the perennials
and add contrast with the prolific Lily of the Valley
which have now leaped into the lawn too.

Adam and Eve would have the answer to the question.

Plum Beautiful

Spring blossoms beautiful to behold
Attracting bees from here, there and everywhere
Hoping to escape a frost.

A Drop In The Bucket

It's tapping time
in Crawford County, PA

Hundreds of buckets throughout the woods
(Pymatuning Lake in the background)

collecting sap from the maple trees

One drop at a time
(the little clear circle by the hole in the bucket)
