Reflections Inside Out

This week's 'reflections' appear in our windows

from the outside on a sunny day.

 

This one is a combination of and outside reflection

and an artificial branch of leaves in a vase inside.

Pretty blue sky here

This is my favorite; again with the combination

of the outside and the inside.

Once again the blue of the sky stands out.

Especially like the muted reflection

behind the closer trees in this one.

 

At first I didn't think this one worked

and was not going to include it

Upon further reflection (pun intended)

it took on a charm of its own.

If you look very closely you can see large pine trees

behind the oaks.

I would even use it as a background or texture in a craft project.

That's what I think of when I see older machinery 

that has 'history' to someone.

Last Thursday I took a jaunt around the country roads

to collect photos before winter storm Jonas arrived.

Turns out he was a no show here.

I believe this is a drop off spot for newspaper bundles

to be delivered by rural drivers.

Seems Washington was needed a compass while passing through.

These signs appear in all directions on the back roads here.

How do birds―especially the little delicate guys like chickadees and titmice―survive the single-digit temperatures and whipping winds of winter?

It turns out that birds (even the little guys) aren’t so delicate after all, and they’ve got a few tricks up their sleeve (uh, wing), too.

Their first layer of defense against the cold is their outer-most one: feathers. There’s a good reason why people love down-filled winter coats―feathers are fantastic insulation.

“Feathers are incredibly specialized structures that serve many purposes including, for many species, keeping them warm,” says 

“Birds’ feathers provide remarkable insulation against the cold, and the oil that coats feathers also provides waterproofing, which is important since the only thing worse than being cold, is being cold and wet,” Peter Marra, head of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center at the National Zoo.

Thanks to Tom, after many many years I finally took the time to have a close look at this family treasure. 

Up until now its been a bit utilitarian.

I use it store old photos which seems appropriate.

Research tells me this is a Wood and Pressed Tin 

Antique Dome Top Trunk 

Tin Floral Design in Black n Blue, Victorian Lithographs

circa late 1800s - early 1900s

the decorative hardware is imprinted with pat mark - 1880

the center lock is imprinted - Yale Towne Mfg. - Stamford Conn USA

To our family it will always be Aunt Maggie's Trunk

(see more about my spinster great aunt 

who homesteaded from SW Virginia to NE Oregon 

around 1903 below)

P.S. Maggie was Mary, the horse trader's (thanks TexWis)

(from last week's post), daughter.

 

The bottom is a little scraped but solid 

and the metal rollers work smoothly.

One lock and two latches (no key)

Three compartments

I suspect there was a removable tray at one time.
