A Favorite 'Fence 'Post'

'Fence Post'
as in blog post

On this Thanksgiving Day I am thankful for
Tex/Wis Theresa and 'Good Fences'.

Good Fences was one of the first link-ups I posted too when I came back to blogging after a break. So I went back to what is, or close to, the first 'fence post' from that time; April 2014
(photos from 2010).

Note that I hadn't yet picked up on the whole linking process and it appears I didn't even know the right day of the week-haha.

A wild aster the RG didn't weed out.   To him, nothing is a weed
and from experience he knew it would be lovely.

Apropos

for the area

This is the gate at the
Elk Country Visitor's Center
at Benezette, PA.

It truly is Elk country. So much so
that this north central mountainous Pennsylvania county
is named Elk County.
These majestic animals roam around everywhere
and I doubt there are very many gates or fences
that keep them out.
They can be seen in early morning and evening
just about anywhere.
But it takes a little more roaming
to find them during the day.

Along the Clarion

I don't suppose this private residence entrance along
the Clarion River in the area of Cook Forest
has been here as long as the ancient trees
but I would say it has some age.

Just Around the Corner

When we first moved to this little neighborhood
ours was the third house on open fields that had been a potato farm.
One of the first things we noticed was no birdsong - nada.

Well over the next 40 years things have changed
as evidenced by this neighbor's trees.

Now each morning we wake to birdsong from dawn to dusk.

A simple pleasure.

Popped Into View

As we drove slowly down an access road
to a Pymatuning Lake boat launch,
we were peering through the brush
to see a fawn that ran that way and suddenly
there was this fence (or remainder there of)
What appears to be the remains of an animal
is in fact a bundle of dead leaves.

I've Come to a Conclusion

Fences in western P. A. are more utilitarian than fancy.

There is a fence in there

But if its purpose is to keep out the wild life,
it's not working.

At least as long as they feast here,
someone's corn is safe.

Unexpected 23 June 2016

Ventures: an undertaking involving uncertainty of the outcome.

We were returning from our early morning jaunt to the lake.
(for a half hour or so, the RG casts his line along the shore.
I wander around with my camera.)

As we approached our driveway, the RG stopped on the road.
Right to our left,
were a white-tailed doe and her fawn.

She took a long look at our big red truck
and then slowly moved forward behind some pine trees.

We drove slowly past our house knowing
she would appear a little further up the road.

We weren't disappointed. There she was prancing along.
And wouldn't you just know . . .
the scene was complete with 'a fence'.

Outstanding or Standing Out? 16 June 2016

Not an outstanding fence but it appeared
over the edge of the rolling terrain in the distance
and stayed in view as we wound around an 'S' curve.
On the other hand, it does stand out
in the midst of all the green.

A Berry Good Fence 051916

The neighbor's fenced in blueberries
seem to have weathered the cold this week.

And with the help of this uber bumblebee

these blossoms should produce lots of berries.

Preston Fence 051216

Continuing to highlight Preston Park this week.

I have been past this entrance untold times in my life
and only learned its unique history today.

Frank Preston always admired iron gates of the type seen at great estates when he was growing up in Leicester, England. He drove several times a year to Toledo, Ohio to consult with Owens glass. Each trip he noticed this gate on a farm in Ohio. He located the gate owner and purchased the gate.
Preston had wanted to build a grand house a few miles away or on the property. In 1956, the year of renovations, the gates were erected. Columns and sweeping buttresses of concrete are covered with the Roman brick facing.
Jane Preston was content with a simple life in the small apartment and the grand house was never built. There was one grand procession through the gates when they were completed and they were opened only one or two more times.

Preston Laboratories is an 87.5-acre property.
It was the glass science research facility and later residence
of Dr. Frank W. Preston and wife Jane Hupman Preston.
Rather than building a separate residence the Preston's
lived in an apartment above the lab.

Take Me Out to the Ball Park Fence 032416

Baseball season is pretty much a year round sport in Arizona.
Ball park fences abound.

Peering through the fence at the Little League ball park
and I just might know #1 ;)

oops, edit to add this one after publishing

And then the moon began to rise through the fence.
And still shining through at the end of the game.
