A little worse for wear but still a treasure

This is a small pitcher my grandmother kept

with her collection of toothpick holders.

Its history is, as I know it, that it belonged to my great great grandmother

for whom my grandmother was named.

The first Annie was born at New Castle on the Tyne, England

and came to America with her family at the age of two in 1851.

A Photo a Day Challenge: Bridges 022516

A 2006 study determined that Pittsburgh has 446 bridges, and with its proximity to three major rivers and countless hills and ravines, Pittsburgh is known as "The City of Bridges".

 

This is Roberto Clemente Bridge viewed from PNC Park.

(on a rainy day)

It is closed to vehicular traffic on Pirates' and Steelers' game days, providing a pedestrian route to PNC Park home of the Pirates baseball team, and Heinz Field home of the Steelers football team.



 

This bridge spans the Slippery Rock Creek

flowing down a gorge formed during the ice age.

 Pondering: Does a bridge cease to be a bridge when it is closed?

Snow Fences have been pretty much unemployed in our area this winter with few snow drifts to hold back.

 This one makes a nice foreground for two stately trees.

That Fine Line . . .

between treasure and junk.

We all know the old adage about junk and treasures and anyone who has watches American Pickers
knows 'treasures' to them can be a stretch.

 

My entries today, in my observation are just plain junk,
but applying the above statements, here they are.

 Give it a few years and it may have sunk to the top of the tires

 

Who towed who?

 

I saw this the first time in the summer and it looks nice surrounded by the plants.
Guess someone didn't have time to do

the needed maintenance for Fall and Winter.

Blue Reflection

Was recently trying my hand at creating reflective photos

So since this one is blue . . .

Wondering . . .

Came upon this building that looks very much like a barn.

 However, it is located on the corner of two well traveled roads;

has keep out signs in a couple windows;

and no sign of farming close by.

Wondering what its future may hold.

Critter Tolerance

When the starlings show up at the feeding station, my usual response is 'oh great'. They come in large flocks, send everybody else flying and proceed to gobble up every seed in sight.
 
Well since they are 'sparrows' that God watches over just like all the rest I realized it was time to become tolerant of them and take time to observe them.

 

 First I discovered they have their own beauty

  Very pretty breast feathers

Bold contrasting beaks

and a cuteness when all puffed up against the cold. 

They were willing to share perching space. 

 and a spot at the feeder

  And everyone else was willing to stick around

 

and feast on left overs.

  

 

So o.k.; a salute to the Starlings 

 

Edit to add: In looking at them again I have given them a nickname - The Polka Dots

(sounds like a singing group from the 50's)

A village hotel of yesteryear currently for sale.

A one room school converted to a cottage.

I want to take another drive to see the other side

which appears to have an addition.

 

A totem pool which is not really a pole

but part of a real tree at Lake Latonka.

 The Dam built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

forming the 300 acre lake.

 

The sound of the water rushing over the dam was soothing.

 

 

A distant view of some of the homes surrounding the lake.

The long storage building houses multiple pontoons.

Perhaps belonging to the residents of Lake Latonka?
