Saturday Birds

 Stopping by to say 'hello'
"good morning RG, how's the catching?"

"See ya later."

A better 'fishing spot' from across the lake?
"hey RG, you should try it from here"

And a quick 'fly by' from our pal the osprey.

Spied this young Catbird and surmised
it had taken a bath and was
'fluffing' in the sun to dry.

One of Those Wonders

...Glory in the Morning
Morning Glory
Most morning glory flowers unravel into full bloom in the early morning. The flowers usually start to fade a few hours before the "petals" start showing visible curling.

I'm always fascinated by the sunshine in the center
when these 'glories' are photographed.

Outdoor Wednesday 071515

Spied this little gem on the way to
the Waterfowl Observatory at our local State Park.

The RG didn't say 'pick it' so . . . no sautéing this one.

They're Back

The first family of wrens had departed a week or so ago. This past week I noticed two sparrows going in the house and each exiting with an egg which they proceeded to drop on the ground and begin to peck. Upon investigation they appeared to be wren eggs.

Nature does what nature does in the pecking order (pun intended) but the sparrows have several other choices out and about the yard and this house is designated for wrens.

So the RG replaced the front of the house with a smaller wren sized hole

and within 24 hours
a new couple had returned for a second nesting.

Photo Review Surprise

Imagine my surprise to find this little honey amongst the Canadian Thistle when reviewing the photos I had taken while capturing an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail for Week-end Butterfly.

Worthy Watchdogs

These 'Ghosts' free range on a homestead in our area.
Guinea fowl are valued as one of the best exterminators of pest insects, making them a compliment to a backyard garden.

Growing up they would come from the neighboring farm
and station themselves under our spruce trees
and start 'talking'.

My little brother was afraid of them and called them  'ghosts'.

Gotcha!

This culprit has been taunting and alluding me for weeks
Friday as I was taking water shots,
I heard the usual '1' croak and then silence.
It's been hopeless, so I continued concentrating on the waterfall.
Then as I made my way around the garden pond . . . there he was.
Spying on me through the leaves all along.

A Care-Free Summer Bloomer

A Care-Free Summer Bloomer - Perennial

 Balloon Flowers
The balloon flower, Platycodon grandiflorus, name comes from the resemblance of its buds to a hot air balloon. Before its buds unfold and reveal their starry petals, they inflate into little balloon-like balls

Noting Nature 070615

Hail, hail the gang's all here.
Butterflies aren't the only ones attracted to milkweed.

 Honey bees

Japanese Beetle and Housefly

The beetle is probably more interested in the leaf
and the fly, well just sunning  itself.
